Some time ago, I was at a dinner with friends. The topic of conversation was my friend’s boyfriend, specifically her dilemma about whether she should give the relationship another chance.

After listening to several apparently reasonable arguments about why she shouldn’t, she took a moment and simply replied, “All right, I’ll give it one last chance. But this time, it really will be the last.”

At that moment, I realised my friend didn’t need that dinner, or the wine, and certainly not the endless stream of advice she received. What she really needed was a book: a book that wouldn’t judge her, convince her, or try to save her, but one that would sit in silence and firmly support that very human instinct for self-sabotage we all have from time to time.

A book that would say exactly what we so often think, but rarely admit. Like my friend, who sometimes — against all logic — chose the wrong path knowing full well that love is blind, or not?
